UAE-IX is a neutral internet traffic exchange to interconnect global networks and network operators and content providers in the GCC region.
Based in Dubai, the new internet exchange is expected to reduce latency times by 80% and costs by 70% for companies operating in the GCC region.
The Middle Eastern telecoms market has boomed in recent years, with traffic on networks also increasing significantly due to the emergence of HDTV, online gaming, multimedia and cloud computing. ISPs in the GCC region have so far exchanged traffic via Europe, Asia and North America, leading to high latency rates. The UAE-IX, initiated by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) and supported by DE-CIX, aims to deliver a local alternative for region traffic exchange and localising internet content.
“Across continents, data traffic is on the rise,” said Harald Summa, managing director of DE-CIX. “The internet’s global infrastructure must grow with it so that data travel shorter distances to the users.”
In an announcement, the TRA also outlined the benefits of the launch of UAE-IX. “The TRA is pleased to be behind the UAE Internet Exchange, the open peering platform in the Middle East fostering reliable and robust connectivity within the region and beyond.”
