The 100G network upgrade is expected to bring substantial capacity increases to the route connecting Egypt to Jordan, catering to growing high-bandwidth requirements in the region and leveraging the company’s existing fibre infrastructure.
As part of the upgrade, Reliance Globalcom will deploy a 100G DWDM system, with Ciena’s platform utilising the vendor’s network architecture, equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical line interfaces.
It is expected the upgrade will support the surge of high-bandwidth applications, including cloud computing, video conferencing, business continuity/disaster recovery, and data centre connectivity, in addition to ever increasing internet traffic.
Upgrading to 100G allows Reliance Globalcom to increase submarine bandwidth on the segment by 10 times, says the company, and enables the launch 10GE services. The move also enables the operator to provide 100GbE connectivity to end customers.
Punit Garg, president and CEO at Reliance Globalcom said the partnership was struck to react to changing demands for bandwidth, while leveraging existing investments in fibre assets. “Ciena’s proven coherent optical technology gives us the ability to upgrade our existing submarine networks from 10G to 40G and 100G rates,” he said. “We are already using Ciena coherent solutions to deliver 40G services on multiple, critical submarine routes, so when we decided to upgrade our FEA route we knew Ciena was the right choice.”
Reliance Globalcom announced plans to utilise Ciena’s capabilities and strengthen its European network earlier this year, and the companies also struck a partnership deal in 2011 for two 40G deployments on the Reliance network. One supported a 5000km submarine link between two key routes; one connecting Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong and the other supported an ultra long haul submarine link between the UK, Spain, Italy and Egypt.
