DE-CIX, manager of the UAE-IX, has said that it expects the carrier neutral exchange point to have a similar appeal in attracting content providers and ISPs to Dubai as its own exchange in Frankfurt.
Customers that have signed up to UAE-IX so far include CDN provider Akamai, Austria’s Anexia, CMC Networks of Mauritius, UAE provider du, Kuwait’s Gulfsat Communications Company, Turkey’s Medianova Internet, Packet Clearing House, Blackberry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), India’s Sify Technologies and Kuwait’s Zajil International Telecom Company.
“The UAE-IX is so attractive for many internet service providers since it acts as a regional bridgehead between Europe and Asia,” said Harald Summa, CEO of DE-CIX.
“It allows ISPs from the Middle East and global internet companies to deliver their content over short distances to users throughout the Arabic-speaking region. This opens up completely new perspectives for the internet economy in the Gulf States, and also for ISPs in India, Pakistan and China, and also in Africa and Europe. The UAE-IX is well on the way to becoming an important exchange point in the global internet.”
Both Akamai and RIM said that the exchange point was an important part of their strategy in the Middle East.
