Through the company’s KA-SAT satellite service, the range of internet solutions provided is expected to enable competitive pricing for European carriers across the continent.
Telefónica said it aims to offer fast internet access to carriers in all areas that are not within reach of terrestrial broadband networks, including rural or urban belts, and also provides a fully diversified backup solution in areas that do not have terrestrial access.
“The bid for Eutelsat Ka band is the logical step for the evaluation of the business of data communications via satellite in Europe, where land-based infrastructures have increasing capillarity,” said Antonio Guerra, director of satellite services at Telefónica.
“KA-SAT will allow us to offer high-quality services at competitive prices, allowing us to update our catalogue of services for operators and corporations. It also allows us to complement the overall strategy of Telefónica Group providing another access technology for services such as M2M or iHealth.”
Jean-François Fenech, CEO at Eutelsat’s broadband subsidiary Skylogic, believes the Spanish operator has followed a path of other operators in increasing the reach of satellite broadband.
“We are convinced that the implementation of satellite broadband via KA-SAT wlll successfully address the challenge of building a strong and fair digital landscape throughout Europe.”
