The plans to develop an optical mesh network also include integrating Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching. As a result of the upgrades, Pacnet’s backbone will be able to support pure packet technology in the optical core, as well as Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (DWDM/SDH) technologies already utilised by the existing core network.
Pacnet hopes the move will enable greater efficiency across its network as well as provide more flexibility with its capacity management. It also hopes the upgrades will help offer its customers a seamless set of network services between its interconnected data centres throughout the region.

EAC-C2C spans 36,800km, connecting Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and China. Upgrades are scheduled to begin in early 2013.
