The service will initially be available in Kampala and the company claims it is the first MNO in Uganda to roll out the service.
“We are happy to claim another first in Uganda with this momentous announcement as MTN Uganda successfully launches its LTE network, offering world-class internet services to our customers,” said Ernst Fonternel, CMO at MTN Uganda.
“What is even more pleasing is that we’ve done this ahead of many other advanced economies around the world.”
20 locations in the country are fully integrated onto the LTE network, designed to deliver speeds almost triple that of the existing mobile connection.
“This launch further emphasises MTN’s commitment in not just transforming its own network but also the businesses of its corporate and SME customers while contributing positively to the overall development of the ICT sector in Uganda,” said Fonternel.
“For the customer this means you can download large files in no time, stream music videos and HD movies without buffering and upload pictures without delay.”
MTN Uganda is investing in telecommunications infrastructure and has deployed 2,800km of fibre backbone in the country.
In February this year, MTN Uganda commissioned a fibre network at the Katuna border to connect the country to an additional subsea cable.
