The US operator’s 4G LTE network now reportedly covers over 95% of its 3G network footprint, and Verizon hopes the implementation of small cells to deliver a more balanced approach to network capacity.
Small cells are expected to be used primarily for enhancing localised capacity and coverage in areas of concentrated traffic, such as shopping malls and business districts in the US.
Earlier this year Verizon expanded its regional footprint with the launch of six new markets in the US, bringing its mobile broadband service to a total of 497 US markets, according to reports.
The small cells will initially be deployed on lamp-posts, utility poles and building walls, and must be connected to a core wireless network.
With Alcatel-Lucent and other network vendors, Verizon hopes implementation of small cells will begin in the coming months.
The announcement suggests an increased focus on network quality and efficiency from Verizon, following its recent plans to increase fibre-optic cable deployment in New York.
