The auction will be held from June 24-28 2013, according to local reports, and will be open to all interested parties, including non-telecommunications companies, in an attempt to encourage competition in the country.
“The auction for 4G LTE Spectrum will promote competition, attract foreign investors, and eliminate the kind of corruption that is seen the world over when it comes to spectrum allocation,” said Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, attorney-general and minister for communications in Fiji.
The 4G upgrade is expected to deliver high-speed internet services to Fijians with compliant mobile devices, allowing them to benefit from faster streaming, browsing and video calling.
“It is our firm belief that every Fijian, no matter where they live or how much the make, should have access to the many benefits that mobile phones and the internet provide," Sayed-Khaiyum said.
The auction will be held at the office of the Department of Communications in the capital, Suva, and winning bidders will be given a deadline for launching the 4G service.
