The network will be initially available in Ghana’s capital Accra, and is designed to meet the growing demand for data and broadband capacity in the region.
The French vendor is expected to deliver hardware and software for the installation of the network, as well as provide optimisation, maintenance and managed services.
“We chose Alcatel-Lucent to build and operate our LTE network because of the strong trust and relationship we developed – and the experience that Alcatel-Lucent has on LTE as a technology, as well as its strong presence in Africa, including Ghana,” said John Taylor, executive chairman at Surfline Communications.
Surfline hopes the 4G roll-out to deliver notably increased performance to customers as they stream videos, browse the internet and send emails.
Africa stands as a major growth opportunity for Alcatel-Lucent, and forms part of its strategy to generate strategic partnerships with operators in the country.
“Surfline, its customers and Alcatel-Lucent will all benefit from the deployment of our market leading 4G LTE solution in Ghana,” said Daniel Jaeger, VP of Alcatel-Lucent in Africa.
The partnership highlights the importance of next-generation technology for Alcatel-Lucent which recently announced a major financial restructure in attempt to reduce its debt.
