Ericsson to invest in global ICT centres

Ericsson to invest in global ICT centres

Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson is to invest approximately SEK 7 billion (over $1 billion) to deploy three global ICT centres.

It is hoped the centres in Stockholm and Linköping, Sweden, and a third in Montreal, Canada will bring faster innovation to the market and facilitate cloud-enabled technology.

More than 24,000 Ericsson R&D engineers will benefit from the centres, allowing industry experts to work across borders with ease and efficiency.

“Great ideas come from collaboration, and at these centres we will push the boundaries of possibility on next-generation technology and services,” said Hans Vestberg, president and CEO at Ericsson.

“Flexibility enabled by new ways of working will realise innovation faster to the market and to our customers."

Ericsson customers will be able to connect remotely for interoperability trials and will have early, real-time access to innovation from wherever they are in the world.

Ericsson is also establishing an R&D hardware design building in Stockholm, and the ICT centres will be located close to existing R&D hubs for further support.

The first Swedish ICT centre is expected to begin initial operation at the end of 2013, with the second following at the end of 2014 and the Canadian unit due for completion in early 2015.

Ericsson has moved towards placing a greater emphasis on enhancing its global footprint. Last month the vendor partnered with a subsidiary of Thailand’s True Corporation to develop its mobile broadband network in the country.
