Alcatel-Lucent’s 7950 XRS IP core router, claimed to be one of the most powerful in the world, is designed to provide up to five times the capacity of its rivals, allowing Telenet to meet the demand of high-bandwidth applications.
The IP core router also supports Telenet’s commitment to reducing its energy footprint, as the system reportedly consumes 66% less energy than other core routers available.
Bert Pelgrims, manager of network and data services engineering at Telenet, explained that its customers were looking for high-quality, personalised experiences that could be shared instantaneously, stored virtually and accessed anytime, anywhere, on any device.
“To do this we knew we needed a core network that could handle the massively increasing load from bandwidth-hungry services and applications being used by our customers,” Pelgrims said.
“We chose Alcatel-Lucent because the 7950 XRS is field-proven to provide the experiences our customers have come to expect and deserve.”
Alcatel-Lucent and Telenet share a longstanding relationship and Luis Martinez Amago, president of EMEA at Alcatel-Lucent, said that Telenet was its first global customer to deploy the 7950 XRS IP core router.
The router is an important part of Alcatel-Lucent’s Shift Plan, announced in June this year, designed to drive the company’s movement towards IP networking.
Despite reports that the company is in danger of disappearing, Alcatel-Lucent appears to be fighting for survival through a number of recent partnerships.
These include a partnership with Zain KSA for enhanced broadband connectivity in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, and with CNT for an Ecuadorian 4G network in September this year.
