The exchange – announced in September this year – is now ready for service and is accepting orders.
DE-CIX North America will operate the US platform which is designed to offer the same level of service as its flagship exchange in Frankfurt, Germany.
“We are committed to making the New York/New Jersey metro area a better place for carriers and ISPs,” said Harald Summa, CEO at DE-CIX.
“We are creating a truly neutral interconnection ecosystem in all major facilities in this market.”
Thanks to its high-capacity Ethernet infrastructure, the DE-CIX exchange in NYC is capable of supporting Terabit traffic, as well as delivering interconnection services on a per-port basis, rather than based on the volume of traffic exchanged.
“Unlike other players, we will not exclude various data centre operators,” Summa added.
“Instead, our footprint will combine both major carrier hotels that have served clients for the last decade and numerous new sites in this metro market.”
The company expects the North American exchange to be in the top-five largest internet exchanges in the world by 2020 and NYC-based journalist Andrew Blum said that as one of the largest marketplaces in the world, an open internet exchange in the city is long overdue.
“With DE-CIX’s arrival, New York will have the vital infrastructure that not only makes the internet work, but keeps it open and free,” Blum said. “DE-CIX New York is a game-change.”
DE-CIX is not the only one to notice the need for better peering in the US. Rival European internet exchange AMS-IX is also preparing to launch its US operations in the coming weeks.
