Global Carrier Awards 2013 take off in style

Capacity's Global Carriers Awards took off in style last night as winners took to the stage to collect their prizes in front of a record-breaking audience.

Attended by over 340 members of the industry, the awards ceremony showcased the companies that had demonstrated the greatest innovation and drive over the last 12 months to deliver successful services and products to the global marketplace.

This year's awards ceremony went deeper than ever before to identify the organisations and individuals that are pioneering the way in wholesale telecoms. Alongside the prestigious and longstanding Best Wholesale Provider category – which this year saw Level 3 Communications walk away with the Best Global Wholesale Provider Award – the awards ceremony featured a range of new eye-catching awards.

Among them was the Project of the Year Award, which attracted entries as diverse as low-latency solutions through to innovative partnership models. Collecting the prize was Orange, for its partnership with state-owned Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT), which as well as providing worldwide roaming coverage also aided the country's infrastructure efforts.

Innovation has been at the forefront of the industry during 2013. Recognising this, competition was extremely high in both the Best Service Innovation and Best Technology Innovation categories. iBasis happily accepted the award for the former as the judges paid special recognition to its LTE roaming service, while Infinera's 500G solution caught the judging panel's eye to successfully collect the latter.

The hard work and dedication from carrier marketing teams was also recognised in this year's awards. Telekom Austria Group's "invisible thief" campaign to promote its SIM Box Detection Service was selected as for Product Campaign of the Year, while TI Sparkle's digital and print brand marketing strategy saw it collect Wholesale Campaign of the Year.

This year's black-tie gala dinner also had a distinct space theme, as guests were treated to a speech from the author, broadcaster, astronaut and physicist Professor Ulrich Walter. Walter is one of the few people to have experienced space travel and provided a highly visual and entertaining presentation, that offered some thought-provoking ideas on the infinite possibilities of space.
