The company is using spectrum in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands and is in the pilot phase of the trials, according to a local newspaper.
Trials are being conducted in laboratory settings in Madrid, as well as in the AZCA and Nuevos Ministerios areas of the city, and are said to have already reached speeds of 280Mbps. The highest speed estimated for LTE technology is thought to be 100Mbps.
LTE-A technology has gradually been taking off this year and has perhaps most successfully been implemented in Asia by SK Telecom.
A number of European operators have also been experimenting with the technology – such as SFR in France and EE in the UK – and Spain is now catching up.
“This technology allows the ability to add different frequency bands for 4G in higher data download speeds,” the company said in a statement.
“In the coming quarters, this capability will be available in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, with LTE network fully prepared to offer the service to the first devices compatible with this technology.”
Vodafone Spain announced the launch of its 4G services in May this year.
