Mexican regulator should declare Televisa dominant, says rival

Satellite company Dish Mexico has called on regulators to declare that broadcaster Grupo Televisa is a dominant company in the sector.

Earlier last year, the government passed a reform bill for the telecommunications industry, which aims to bolster competition in both the phone and TV markets through new asymmetric rules, which curb the market power of companies it declares dominant.

Dish competes with Televisa’s satellite company Sky and has complained that Televisa is leading in both the broadcast and pay-TV services by audience figures and subscribers. It has written to Mexico’s telecom regulator, the IFT, in a bid to address the issue.

The IFT launched an investigation into broadcaster Grupo Televisa and Carlos Slim’s América Móvil in December to establish if they are dominant.
