The build-out of 1.8GHz base stations will improve the speed of the operator’s network to 150Mbps.
"SK Telecom will begin building base stations for LTE in the 2.1GHz band in the second quarter of 2014, making the network available for commercialisation as soon as the supporting handsets come to market," the carrier announced in a statement.
The company has also announced that it has gained approval to use 10MHz of bandwidth in the 2.1GHz band for LTE. SK Telecom now has LTE bandwidth in three different frequency bands: 10MHz in the 800MHz band, 20MHz in the 1.8GHz band and 10MHz in the 2.1GHz band.
The operator plans to deploy LTE-A carrier aggregation technology to combine the three frequency bands to support speeds of up to 300 Mbps.
