Thai telecoms regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), announced that it will redistribute 92.5MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands.
The spectrum was previously issued to operators under a concession model which Thailand introduced in the early 1990s, where arrangements were separately negotiated under different terms.
These concessions are due to expire in the next few years and the announced auctions complement the regulators plan to transition to an internationally standard licensing model.
The Bangkok Post reported that 25MHz of 1800MHz spectrum used by TrueMove and DPC will be auctioned off in March this year.
17.5MHz of 900MHz spectrum in use by AIS will be sold off in November, and 50MHz of 1800MHz spectrum being used by DTAC will be up for auction in September 2015.
The NBTC reportedly plans to set a cap on the maximum spectrum won by any one player.
In August last year, Real Future, subsidiary of Thailand’s True Corporation, signed an agreement with equipment vendor Ericsson for the development of its mobile broadband network in the country.
