Ericsson’s Radio Dot System is designed to deliver low latency, high speed and enhanced quality for network users.
Swiss incumbent Swisscom has completed a trial of the system on its network, and three other operators – Telstra, SingTel and SoftBank Mobile – are due to trial the system in the coming weeks.
"Our customers are used to always receiving the best possible network quality for their mobile phone, tablet or notebook user experience,” said Patrick Weibel, senior architect or wireless strategy at Swisscom.
“By integrating it with our 4G/LTE and 3G networks, the Ericsson Radio Dot System can deliver a seamless mobile broadband user experience for our consumer and business services inside enterprise buildings and public venues."
The Radio Dot System is said to be simple to install and fully integrated with the outdoor network. It comprises an antenna, or “Dot”, which connects to standard LAN cabling to deliver mobile broadband access.
Ericsson has also signed a deal with MTN Group in Africa to deploy the system.
MTN claims to be the first African operator deploying the service and Jyoti Desai, group chief technology and information officer for MTN, said: “Ericsson has enabled MTN to meet the needs of our customers by providing a high quality and consistent experience everywhere, while also extending MTN's brand promise to the enterprise segment.”
Ericsson’s solution is primarily designed to meet growing indoor data demand, but it will also improve coverage and capacity for voice services and is hoped to support upcoming services such as voice over LTE (VoLTE).
