The move is aimed at enhancing connectivity between the two countries, helping to reinforce their positions as telecoms hubs for the GCC and wider Middle East region.
The two companies are presently carrying out feasibility studies on the route, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.
The cable is expected to offer a low latency alternative to Reliance’s FALCON system, which presently connects the two countries.
“Our cooperation with Ooredoo will allow us to not only provide high-quality and low latency services to a booming neighbouring country as Qatar, but also to provide Qatar access to the East and West through our hub of multiple cable systems covering over 50 countries on five continents,” said Dr. Amer Awadh Al Rawas, CEO at Omantel.
For Ooredoo, the move will help support its Omani subsidiary Nawras. The news also follows its recent involvement in the Asia Africa Europe-1 (AAE-1), which will run from south east Asia to Africa and Europe through Egypt, connecting Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand , Oman, AE, Djibouti, Qatar, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Italy and France.
