TeliaSonera launches PoP with datamena in Dubai

TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) has launched a PoP in Dubai in partnership with regional data centre provider datamena.

The PoP expands TSIC’s footprint in the Middle East and follows news revealed earlier this week that the company has opened PoPs in both Oman and Qatar with Omantel and Ooredoo, respectively.

The new PoP will further enable the Nordic operator to serve customers both in the Middle East and Africa.

“Deploying a PoP in datamena’s carrier neutral data centre is in line with our commitment to enable high performance connectivity to operators and content providers worldwide as well as in these emerging markets,” said Brendan Ives, president of TSIC.

TSIC expects the PoP to provide new opportunities for clients seeking enhanced international connectivity and IP transit services in the MENA region.

“TSIC’s expansive reach across Europe, the US and Asia as well as its strengths in providing connectivity for premium content and online gaming makes it an ideal fit as a part of datamena’s diverse ecosystem,” said Mahesh Jaishankar, VP at datamena.

Jaishankar noted that the deal was an important part of datamena’s strategy to simplify business for carriers and content providers in the region.

“Tenants in datamena, such as TSIC, enjoy easy access to their customers, through existing connectivity routes and through new cables such as Middle East to Europe Terrestrial System (MEETS) that was announced earlier, further simplifying connectivity in the region,” he added.

The news falls in line with hints of expansion from Ives in his first interview since being appointed president of TSIC.

“We always keep a watching brief and continue to explore whether it makes sense to go further afield, but at this stage, our plan for 2014 is to serve the Middle East from the three strategic hubs of Oman, Qatar and Dubai,” Ives said.
