Beginning on March 20, the trial will run over three months and will involve 2,000 selected customers who have subscribed to KPN’s quad-play service.
The trial is designed to test the quality of service for live TV viewing outdoors and also to test new possibilities for interactive TV over 4G.
The service includes 16 channels and will be available on both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.
KPN has not released details of end-user pricing or when it expects the service to be rolled out commercially, due to negotiations with other commercial broadcasters.
KPN used the results of a survey to support its move, which claimed that a majority of under-30s in the Netherlands said they expect to watch more TV on-demand than through traditional channels within five years.
The announcement follows the news last month that KPN is to cut up to 2,000 jobs after it reported a 13% year-on-year drop in its Q4 mobile revenues.
