AT&T announced plans to acquire Leap in July last year. The company operates under the Cricket brand, a prepaid wireless service, which AT&T will retain and integrate into its own operations.
The deal provides Cricket's customers with access to AT&T’s 4G LTE network and it expects to roll out its service in further cities across the US.
AT&T gains access to Leap’s 4.5 million customers, giving it a strong presence in the prepaid market. The US telco will also use Leap's unused spectrum to bolster its LTE services.
AT&T plans to drop the Aio Wireless brand it launched last year and move these customers over to Cricket.
To gain approval from regulators, AT&T will divest Leap spectrum in 12 markets and agreed to continue Leap's rate plans for its existing customers.
