CityFibre has acquired the Coventry CORE network, comprising 140km of metro fibre, from the Coventry City Council, which it intends to extend and upgrade in the coming months.
The Coventry CORE will undergo extensive network upgrades to enable the delivery of gigabit (1000Mbps) internet speeds, and will join York and Peterborough in the UK as one of CityFibre’s Gigabit Cities.
“Ultrafast gigabit speed connectivity is vital for Coventry businesses to enable them to compete and succeed not just on the national, but also on the international stage,” said Damian Gannon, cabinet member of strategic finance and resources at Coventry City Council.
“As a Gigabit City, Coventry can now set itself alongside the most digitally advanced locations around the world and we look forward to the numerous social and economic advantages that such a status will bring; driving economic investment and catalysing business startups,” he added.
The Coventry infrastructure will be CityFibre’s largest metro network – increasing the company’s national network footprint by approximately 50% – and will serve nearly 300 buildings, including council offices, schools and community centres.
“As a Gigabit City, Coventry will position itself at the heart of the UK economy as the technological revolution continues to gather pace,” said Greg Mesch, CEO at CityFibre. “CityFibre is dedicated to bringing world-leading, lightning-fast connectivity to cities across the UK, boosting the economy and revolutionising online experience.”
