FET is said to be the first operator in the world to launch LTE services in the APT700 band, which is considered ideal for rural coverage and indoor urban penetration.
Due to these benefits, Ericsson reports that the APT700 band is gaining traction in Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
“We are proud to roll out the first commercial LTE network in the world on the APT700 band,” said Yvonne Li, president of Far EasTone.
“Through our long and successful relationship with Ericsson, we achieved another significant advancement in the telecom industry.”
The move makes FET the second operator in Taiwan to launch 4G services, following Chunghwa Telecom on May 29 this year.
FET plans to expand its 4G footprint to cover Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung and Kaohsiung, covering 75% of Taiwan's population by the end of this month.
Following FET’s announcement this week, rival Taiwan Mobile became the third operator in Taiwan to launch 4G services, while setting a target of securing at least 500,000 subscribers by the end of this year.
