Signed in Oakland, NZ, the MoU is designed to enable the two companies to develop IoT business services in three key areas: Smart Car, Telematics and Smart City.
“To develop the Korean IoT industry and pioneer the global market, SK telecom is actively contributing to the creation of a global IoT ecosystem,” said Cho Seung-won, SVP and head of public business office at SK Telecom.
“By cooperating with Telecom New Zealand in particular, the company is committed to expand Korea’s successful IoT business model to the global market.”
The MoU was signed after both companies discovered synergies for the development of IoT while preparing for a technology summit focussed on Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
The agreement has received approval from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning in New Zealand.
SK Telecom reportedly launched IoT services in Korea in 2000 and has made a number of developments in future technologies this year including a MoU signed with Swedish vendor Ericsson for 5G, as well as the creation of a tri-band LTE-A solution.
