Telefónica selects Alcatel-Lucent for 100G network

Spain’s Telefónica and French vendor Alcatel-Lucent have partnered for the deployment of a 100Gbps optical network in north west, eastern and southern Spain.

Alcatel-Lucent will implement its 1830 photonic service switch (PSS) platform to help the Spanish operator improve the capacity of its networks in these regions, in a bid to meet growing demands for high-speed broadband connectivity.

Roque Lozano, president of Alcatel-Lucent Spain, said that video-based data traffic is growing extensively for Telefónica in Spain, and its infrastructure therefore needs further capacity and reliability in order to support this.

“With future video services and mass high-definition video storage in the cloud, Telefónica needed the most reliable and flexible technology available today,” Lozano said. “Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G solution has everything to take Telefónica to the next level of its network transformation in Spain.”

Alcatel-Lucent will deliver a DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplex) solution, as well as integrated OTN (optical transport network) switching and aggregation, to support this increasing traffic.

Telefónica upgraded its 4G network in the country in July this year and the uptake of 4G LTE services in Spain is thought to be a key driver of this increase in demand from video and cloud applications.
