Through the demonstration by China Telecom, Nokia’s LTE base station achieved interoperability with a commercial user chipset, and the successful trial will be tailored towards commercial adoption of carrier aggregation to improve LTE network speeds. It will also enhance coverage for LTE users in areas where both variants of LTE are deployed.
Through the carrier aggregation, the companies achieved a stable peak download speed of 260Mbps, which was achieved in a carrier aggregation demonstration with FDD 20MHz in 1.8GHz and TDD 20MHz in 2.6GHz.
FDD spectrum contributed 150Mbps and TDD spectrum contributed 110Mbps.
“It’s highly satisfying to achieve yet another world first toward commercialisation and globalisation of FDD-TDD carrier aggregation,” said Zhang Qi, VP of TD-LTE at Nokia Networks. “This achievement with our partner China Telecom will also encourage other operators globally to look at further spectrum combination for FDD-TDD carrier aggregation into advanced 3GPP Rel-12. We are already working with many major operators globally to deliver FDD-TDD convergence for commercial use.”
Interoperability of Nokia’s LTE base station indicates that FDD-TDD carrier aggregation is getting rapidly closer to deployment for LTE users. China Telecom will also now be able to utilise the service to improve LTE coverage and improve throughput capacity.
