The Seabras-1 cable is a six fibre pair system with an initial maximum design capacity of 60Tbps and is expected to support a wide variety of global communications services for businesses and consumers in South America.
“Seabras-1 is an important catalyst for the continued expansion of affordable broadband penetration in Brazil and the region,” said Philippe Dumont, president at Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks.
Alcatel-Lucent will deploy a range of solutions including an integrated 100G wet plant of cable and high bandwidth repeaters, as well as its Light Manager service which utilises advanced coherent technology to offer flexibility and increase direct connectivity between countries.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with Alcatel-Lucent during the manufacturing and build stage of this project,” said Larry Schwartz, CEO at Seaborn Networks.
“And we are most appreciative of our customers who have enabled us to achieve this important milestone so as to ensure a ready-for-service date in 2016.”
Alcatel-Lucent is also responsible for project management, system design, installation and system commissioning.
In January 2014, the Seabras-1 cable secured additional funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
