The government has promised telecoms companies in the country a package of up to €1 billion, which is part of regulators plans to reinvest proceeds from a controversial mobile frequency auction into broadband infrastructure.
It will begin spending on the project in 2016, and the investments are designed to provide capacity to telecoms companies, particularly in remote areas, including the alps, where it remains expensive to build out such infrastructure.
Operators, including Hutchison’s Drei and T-Mobile claimed that Austria’s recent 4G frequency auction was flawed because it proved to be Europe’s most expensive 4G auction per population.
The infrastructure project is expected to ease some of the pressures on regulators, and Hutchison has since withdrawn its appeal against the auction.
