Vodafone NZ, Southern Cross and Ciena demonstrate 4K video

Vodafone New Zealand, Southern Cross and US vendor Ciena have announced the successful demonstration of trans-Pacific 4K video transmission.

The trial was carried out at the Global Lambda Interchange Facility (GLIF) annual conference, hosted by research and education advanced network New Zealand (REANNZ), and used Ciena’s digital video transport and assured networking solutions over both carriers’ networks.

Ciena’s solutions enabled 4K images to travel approximately 30,000km with a total latency of less than one quarter of a second, over Southern Cross and Vodafone New Zealand’s long-distance networks.

All encryption processes occurred at line speeds with no noticeable delay, which is expected to enable broadcasters, health institutions, governments and other organisations to secure their data flows and protect content from theft.

"As society continues on the path of transforming to a digital world, being able to transmit uncompressed video is only going to become more important and crucial to the operations of broadcasters, research institutions or even federal governments,” said Rodney Wilson, senior director of external research at Ciena.

“What’s more, being able to accomplish this in partnership with Vodafone New Zealand, Southern Cross and REANNZ makes this an important accomplishment with premiere collaborators.”

Tony Baird, technology director at Vodafone New Zealand, said that the trial was a milestone for the company.

“We are constantly looking to evolve our network to scale and meet the demands of not just today, but tomorrow and beyond. We are delighted to have been involved,” Baird said.
