The deal, reportedly worth up to $319 million, will see Telstra plan and design the nationwide network roll-out. The value of the deal is based on the estimate of the volume of work, and is subject to the rate of progress of the roll-out, as well as future price reviews.
"We're pleased to have won this work in a competitive market and we look forward to working with NBN Co to help it prepare for the construction of the next phase of the NBN," said Kate McKenzie, COO at Telstra.
Telstra will focus on the designs of fibre-to-the-node, fibre-to-the-basement and fibre-to-the-premise, and work is due to start in early 2015.
“Getting Telstra involved makes perfect sense,” said Rod Sims, Australia’s competition boss.
“The issue that we all have to keep an eye on is what information they get relative to their competitors. It is crucial than NBN make information available to everybody at the same time.”
