The anti-corruption agency of the Communist Party said that Zong Xinhua, former head of China Unicom’s ecommerce and IT unit, has “seriously violated discipline and is suspected of committing crimes”.
Zong is not the first official at a state-run company to be caught out by the agency, and his prosecution follows that of Zhang Zhijiang, former head of China Unicom’s network construction unit.
China Unicom declined to comment on Zong’s prosecution and instead focussed on his dismissal in December last year; due to concerns over his connection with corrupt activities.
Corruption has long been a problem for China’s state-owned conglomerates and Chinese president Xi Jinping is now implementing a vigorous anti-corruption drive in a bid to tackle the issue.
The last anti-corruption campaign in the telecoms sector in 2011 saw a number of China Mobile officials prosecuted for bribery, with one receiving a death sentence.
