The operator is said to be considering buying Millicom’s operations in Senegal, Ghana and Chad. Millicom is reportedly looking to sell its assets in West and Central Africa following increasing pressure from regulators to expand its network from urban centres to rural areas. In February the operator agreed to sell Orange some of its assets in the Democratic Republic of Congo for $160 million.
Orange has consistently emphasised Africa as a strategic priority. The operator is seeking new opportunities in East Africa following the sale of its 70% stake in Telkom Kenya to Helios Investments last November. It also stated its ambitions for West Africa in January by announcing plans to acquire Cellcom Liberia and Airtel’s operations in Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone.
