Prime Minister Perry Christie divulged in a recent budget speech that after meeting certain holding requirements had been met by Cable Bahamas he had instructed the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) to proceed with issuing the licence.
The news has been labelled as “monumental” by local media at a time when the cable television and broadband provider is tasked with providing 99% mobile coverage in New Providence and 80% coverage in Grand Bahama over the next three months.
"This is an historic and pivotal day for the BaAttachmentshamas and we are proud to have won the licence. But, it is the Bahamian people that are the real winners," said CBL president Anthony Butler, who added that the company would publish a full timeline for its network rollout and activation.
“We understand the market and the expectations of Bahamians. The mobile service needs to be reliable, affordable and fully support applications that customers want to use, and that is what Bahamians can look forward to from us.”
