Hawaiki and TE SubCom launch 14,000km subsea cable survey

Ahead of deploying the 14,000km transpacific submarine cable system, Hawaiki Submarine Cable and TE SubCom have launched a marine route survey.

Following a survey of landing sites from May to July 2016, the new survey will look at the marine route for deploying the cable system in transpacific conditions.

“After very carefully planning our transpacific route and conducting an extensive survey of each landing site, we are extremely pleased to launch the marine route survey, which will give us data necessary to safely and properly deploy the system in the coming months,” said Remi Galasso, chief executive officer of Hawaiki.

Aaron Stucki, president of TE SubCom, added: “Before deploying a cable system, a marine route survey is conducted to gather the geophysical and geotechnical data needed to ensure the cable is buried safely and securely. It’s a vital and significant step in the process of launching a new cable system, and we share in Hawaiki’s excitement as our companies move forward with this project.”

Hawaiki Submarine Cable received its first payment from Natixis bank last month as TE SubCom started construction of the transpacific cable. Hawaiki will be the highest cross-sectional capacity link between the US, Australia and New Zealand.

The carrier-neutral cable system is scheduled for completion in mid-2018. Galasso added: “We are on time and on budget.”
