Huawei Marine and Belize Telemedia to deploy 32Tbps cable

Huawei Marine Networks has teamed up with Belize Telemedia to build a 24km undersea cable system connecting Belize and the island of San Pedro to enhance connectivity to the country.

The Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL) undersea cable will deliver a design capacity featuring 40 channels at 100G per fibre over 8-fibre pairs, resulting in up to 32Tbit/s. The design, flexible for future capacity upgrades, is a huge boost to high-speed mobile services in Belize.

The SEUL cable will help Belize Telemedia modernise its mobile and landline network to significantly improve broadband connectivity and quality across the country. The project includes deploying LTE (4G) mobile service and fibre to residential and business buildings (FTTX) in San Pedro, Belize.

"We have made it our mission to put Belize in the top three in the region in terms of connectivity and broadband speeds. The Strategic Evolution Underwater Link is another step in achieving our goal, along with the build out of nationwide 4G LTE," said Anwar Barrow, chairman of Belize Telemedia’s executive committee.

"Once again we turn to our technology partner Huawei and Huawei Marine for their experience and expertise on this undersea cable project."

It’s not the only partnership between the two companies, as they are both working towards launching a nationwide 4G LTE network in Belize. Belize Telecom, under its mobile banner of its DigiCell Mobile brand, chose Huawei as its vendor and announced earlier this year that the installation of the nationwide mobile network throughout Belize would be expected to launch in December 2016.

Mike Constable, CEO of Huawei Marine, added: "We are excited to continue our partnership with BLT [Belize Telemedia Ltd.], this time to construct a next-generation undersea cable system that will use advanced technology to bring fast, reliable and low-cost connectivity to the people of Belize."

The project is scheduled to start this summer, with an expected completion date in Q2 of 2017.
