Verizon boosts LatAm presence with 5 new PoPs

Verizon Digital Media Services has expanded its footprint in South America by launching five new points of presence (PoPs) on its Edgecast Network.

Verizon has added six PoPs in five countries this year, which are located in Medellín, Colombia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Barranquilla, Colombia; Lima Peru; and two PoPs in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It has eight PoPs in total within its South American network.

“The addition of these new PoPs significantly improves our network performance on key measurements such as response time and throughput. In recent tests, our network had the fastest throughput and quickest response time when compared to other CDNs in the respective LatAm countries,” Verizon said in a statement.

The Rio de Janeiro PoP also serves as a Transact PoP — a purpose-built, PCI Level 1 Certified CDN service that securely carries e-commerce traffic and has critical operational protocols specific to e-commerce, such as holiday code freezes.

Kyle Okamoto, vice president of global network at Verizon Digital Media Services, said: “Our unique, centralised and horizontally scalable PoP architecture helps our content delivery network consistently perform at a superior level. As our presence continues to rapidly grow in South America, we will continue to invest in long-term network infrastructure developments in this market.”

Verizon worked with several local partners to launch the PoPs, including Telxius, which helped it launch in Lima, Barranquilla and Buenos Aires. “As Verizon Digital Media Services continues to invest in the LatAm region, we look forward to finding even more opportunities to collaborate together, to continue to bring the highest quality of content available to consumers everywhere,” added Rafael Arranz, Telxius’ chief operating officer.

Verizon has also announced a new customer, Brazil’s largest tour operator CVC Brasil Operadora e Agência de Viagens SA, which will use its CDN and also authoritative-only IP Anycast DNS. Miguel Alcantara, CIO of CVC Brasil, said: “We required a dependable, agile solution that could adapt to our ever-growing digital market. Throughout a lengthy, rigorous trial process, Verizon Digital Media Services consistently demonstrated its quickness, nimbleness, issue resolution, and ease of use with high quality. We could not have asked for a better partner.”

As OTT traffic in Latin America surges, the addition of six PoPs will be welcome news for customers like CVC Brasil.
