Italtel bids to virtualise Iran’s broadband telecoms

Italian equipment vendor Italtel has made a pitch for Iran’s plans to build a nationwide ultra-fast broadband network that would focus on health and education services.

The vendor is one of the first to declare its intentions to contest in the Iranian market, which is slowly opening up to Western vendors following the gradual relaxation of sanctions.

CEO Stefano Pileri told a conference in Tehran: “Italtel is looking to contribute to the development of Iran through technology and innovative solutions. Transforming existing networks and installing ultra-fast wideband infrastructures needs to be a top priority to ensure that people living in Iran truly benefit from Internet technology and vital services can be developed.”

Italtel first made overtures to Iran in April 2016, when it took part in an official Italian mission to Tehran, with Italy’s prime minister Matteo Renzi. Several bilateral agreements were signed in a number of sectors during the two-day visit, said Italtel about the April tour, without giving details.

Italtel said it intends to use its experience in delivering international projects for network transformation from TDM to IP “to ensure the development of cost-effective and appropriate solutions for Iran”.

Pileri, a former CTO of Telecom Italia, said that it would offer a platform based on virtualisation techniques, which “is key to deploying Iran’s infrastructures as it will allow a cost-effective and smooth evolution of the networks to enable both traditional and next-generation telecommunication services, without the need for huge investment. This should be done in partnership with local companies so that capabilities in the region are utilised and a long lasting relationship with the Iran market is established.”Pileri was speaking in Tehran at the Iran Connect conference, which finishes tomorrow.
