Vietnam grants 4G licenses to four operators

The Vietnamese government has granted licenses to four mobile operators, allowing them to launch 4G services over the 1,800MHz spectrum band.

MobiFone Telecommunications Corporation, Viettel Group, and Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) were all granted the 4G licenses by minister of information and communication Trương Minh Tuấn on 19 October, with GTel Mobile receiving its license the following day.

Their permission for 4G services is part of a government-led telecommunication development plan building towards 95% 4G population coverage by 2020, according to a report from Vietnam News.

GTel's license acquisition leaves Vietnamobile as the market's only operator yet to secure a 4G license, the report adds.

Viettel piloted 4G services in Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu and Hà Nội late last year, while VNPT has been testing the service in HCM City and Kiên Giang since January 2016. Altogether, the three operators provide services for more than 100 million customers.
