RCom and GCX launch seven-city 100G network in India

Indian operator Reliance Communications has launched a new 100G network connecting seven cities with international gateways in Chennai and Mumbai.

The project, called Cumulous Network, has been started in association with Reliance’s international carrier subsidiary Global Cloud Xchange (GCX).

“Chennai and Mumbai are both powerhouse cities and gateways for the major tech and financial institutions doing business across the Indian subcontinent,” said Bill Barney, co-CEO of Reliance Communications and chairman and CEO of GCX. “The new Cumulous Network will complement our digital backbone as we complete deployment of our cloud infrastructure across India.”

GCX said it will be able to deliver “significant capacity across this important Indian subcontinent route with the ability to further upgrade in the future in alignment with technological advancements and market demand”.

Its name, Cumulous Network, is unconnected with the US-based Linux specialist Cumulous Networks. It will connect seamlessly into GCX’s global subsea infrastructure, said the carrier, and will interconnect with Reliance Communications’ established network of data centres.

Wilfred Kwan, chief operations officer for enterprise at Reliance Communications and GCX, said: “The new Cumulous Network will be a vital backbone to meet soaring demands of new applications such as the company’s new initiatives in the internet of things, the deployment of cloud infrastructure as well as the continued expansion of enterprise franchise in India.”
