The 11,000km cable was announced last year and is currently under construction. It will provide eight fibre pairs, offering leading edge technology which will allow BRUSA to support ultrafast transmission capacity and to increase end-to-end connectivity and the availability of ultrahigh-speed broadband services.
Telxius, Telefonica’s infrastructure arm, said the cable could extend to Fortaleza (Brazil) and San Juan (Puerto Rico) in the future.
BRUSA is set to offer one of the lowest latency communication links between between two of the largest economies in the region, the US and Brazil.
It comes as Telxius is in the process of strengthening its infrastructure in the Americas, following the deployment of the Pacific Caribbean Cable System, which links Jacksonville in the US to the,British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Curacao, Colombia, Panama and Ecuador. It offers capacity of up to 80 Tbps.
In addition, Telxius also manages the Unisur cable which connects Uruguay with Argentina and the SAM-1 system. Deployed in 2000, SAM-1 forms a 25,000 km ring linking the USA, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
