Singtel announces low-powered IoT network

Singtel has unveiled plans to deploy a nationwide internet of things network by the end of September, supporting low-powered IoT technologies for enterprises.

Singtel’s network, which is set to go live in September, will support both CAT-M1 and narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) technologies, both low-powered wide-area network (LPWAN) solutions. The can support devices with battery life of up to 10 years operating on both low-band and mid-band frequencies.

Singtel said its cellular IoT over CAT-M1 network will also enable businesses to make voice over LTE calls in future, using small, portable devices such as wearables and trackers.

Bill Chang, CEO of g roup enterprise at Singtel, said: “The launch of our network provides an ideal platform for the proliferation of IoT devices and applications.

“With more businesses embracing the digital future, it paves the way for IoT adoption as Singapore advances towards becoming a Smart Nation. We welcome businesses to be part of the growing IoT ecosystem by leveraging on our robust infrastructure and network.”

Singtel said it will also harness its cyber security expertise to support businesses in implementing secure and reliable IoT solutions. According to IDC, security concerns are a key deterrent for businesses in deciding whether to deploy remote sensors and IoT devices to their ecosystems.

The Singaporean operator has been exploring the use of IoT alongside local companies since 2016, with applications tested ranging from environmental sensing and waste management to asset tracking and monitoring of medicine consumption.

The rollout will also see Singtel invite business and technology partners to take part in its IoT Innovation Lab, which it runs in partnership with Ericsson, in order to develop new solutions and explore the technology benefits IoT can bring.

“We are constantly forging partnerships with IoT enablers to create a rich IoT ecosystem, and develop end-to-end solutions to meet our customers’ needs,” Chang added.
