Italy starts third consultation on rural high-speed broadband

Infratel Italy has started a public consultation on high-speed broadband services in a number of poorly served areas of the country.

The third and final phase of a project to find ways to cover what Italy calls “white areas” covers the regions of Calabria and Apulia and the island of Sardinia.

The deadline for submitting comments to the consultation is 31 October, said Infratel, which is working for the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico – Ministry of Economic Development – because of what the government calls “market failure”.

The aim is to ensure existing operators, including TIM and OpEn Fiber, do not duplicate their efforts.

The Italian government has already committed €2.65 billion to promote high-speed broadband in the first two phases of the project.
