The PoP is located at Westland Avenue in Portland and is Hurricane Electric’s first to be established in the state.
Hurricane Electric’s move into the region comes at an important time of growth for Maine’s innovation sector. According to a recent report, the state has seen an uptick in technology related employment, with the tech sector currently comprising four percent ($2.3 billion) of Maine’s economy. Additionally, Maine has become home to over 2,600 technology related companies.
The new PoP means that customers of MFC – a dark fibre leasing company that supports all of the major telecoms carriers in Maine – will have access to Hurricane Electric’s global network, which is connected to 174 major exchange points and exchanges traffic directly with more than 6,500 different networks.
Organisations will be able to utilise Hurricane Electric’s IPv4 and IPv6 network through 100GE (100 Gigabit Ethernet), 10GE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) and GigE (1 Gigabit Ethernet) ports.
“Hurricane Electric is excited to move into Maine to help meet the demand for high-quality IP transit,” said Mike Leber, president of Hurricane Electric.
“We’re delighted that this latest expansion will provide access to our global network to another growing technology market in the Northeast United States, enabling business throughout the region to remain competitive in the global economy.”
