The annual report by Vertical Systems Group ranks incumbents and cable multiple-system operators (MSOs) based on its US retail Ethernet port share.
In the incumbent ranking, CenturyLink come in at first position on the 2017 board, because of its increased number of Ethernet ports from its Level 3 merger, and up from third position in the previous year. As a result of this change AT&T moved into second position from first, where it had been for a long time. Verizon - including its ports from its acquisition of XO – came in third position, followed by Windstream in at fourth. Frontier came in fifth position marking its first entry into the ranking. CenturyLink was also recently named as number one on the US Ethernet leaderboard.
Other companies included in the incumbent carrier segment include: Alaska Communications, Cincinnati Bell, Hawaiian Telecom, TDS Telecom and other incumbents.
As for the cable MSO leaderboard, Spectrum Enterprise retains its first position in 2017 largely driven by its strong growth in fibre-based Ethernet connections. Comcast stays in second position, followed by Cox in third. Altice, comes in at fourth position in the Cable MSO segment.
According to the findings, cable MSOs have made strategic investment in deep fibre buildouts, aggressive service pricing and market expansion to include mid-market and national enterprises. Spectrum Enterprise is the top cable MSO on the US fiber lit buildings leaderboard. Comcast had the highest organic growth rate of all the companies in 2017.

The findings are based on share calculations which includes Vertical Systems Group's base of enterprise installations, plus direct input from biannual surveys of network operators selling Ethernet network services.
