Worldwide revenues were up 70% year-on-year in Q2 2010, and Infonetics believes that IP-to-IP connectivity is overtaking IP-to-TDM in the service provider market. SBCs and media servers are cited as the main growth engines for carrier VoIP equipment this year, with SBCs increasingly being used to interconnect to other service providers, as opposed to access applications. Fixed-mobile convergence and wireless access are also expected to drive solid growth.
According to the firm’s Q2 2010 Service Provider VoIP Equipment and Subscribers report, SIP trunking is currently the main SBC application used by service providers, but will be overtaken by interconnection between service providers by 2012 as voice networks increasingly become all-IP. The fastest-growing applications for SBCs are fixed/mobile convergence and wireless access, including 4G voice, mobile VoIP over 3G, and RCS (Rich Communication Suite). Acme Packet was named by 95% of service providers as a “top SBC vendor”, followed by Genband.
