A North American Mobile Market report by Juniper Research indicates such migration is due to developing technology and a decline in mobile music, such as the ringtone market. This has driven growth in emerging sectors with increases from gaming, adult, user-generated content and infotainment. Mobile content and applications in the region accounted for $4 billion in revenue in 2009.
US carriers are targeting the launch of 4G LTE networks and may return to a tiered pricing structure to increase data revenue. The report notes US carriers are also developing their own application stores to compete with Apple’s app store. Financial institutions in north America are also promoting mobile banking through wireless devices.
