Pacnet and Chongqing’s regional government authority will jointly build a number of data centres to create a focal point for the provision of IT services. Both parties say that this will support industrial and economic development in the region.
Ten square kilometres of land in the municipality has been designated as a Cloud Computing Special Zone, of which three square kilometres are being reserved for the building of data centres, to be completed in three phases.
The total investment for the first phase of development is estimated at around $150 million, out of which $30 million will be used for building the facilities and acquiring cloud computing-related software and equipment.
Pacnet will also be the strategic partner for the provisioning of international submarine cable capacity that will be connected to the Chongqing Cloud Computing Special Zone.
“We look forward to sharing our telecommunications and data centre expertise to support Chongqing’s vision of becoming a world-class cloud computing hub,” said Richard Carden, senior vice president of sales with Pacnet.
Pacnet already operates more than 100,000 square feet of data centre space globally, and launched new data landing stations across Asia in November 2010.
