South Korea tops new broadband index

South Korea has topped the new worldwide government broadband index (GBBi), formed by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The new GBBi index assesses countries based on government planning for next-generation broadband, rather than current broadband capability. The index compares speed, cost, roll-out and regulations. South Korea ranked the highest because of its government’s plans to improve speed and coverage while spending less than 1% of the annual budget. South Korea, Japan and Singapore all ranked highly because of their high-speed broadband and their target to provide 1Gbps services to more than 90% of households within the next two to five years.

Australia falls into the latter half of the index due to expensive plans for a new National Broadband Network that will cost the government 7.6% of the annual budget.
