This latest development is in line with Turkey’s growing need for high speed connectivity and increased international links, which has to date, been slower in uptake than other developed European countries. The company believes the new infrastructure which is part of the Mediterranean’s largest privately owned and managed network, and will work to serve the internet connectivity needs of carriers and ISPs in the region.
“Istanbul is taking firm steps towards becoming one of the key financial centres,” said Paolo Ferrari, CEO at Telecom Italia Sparkle (TIS). “We have decided to invest in this new cable system to support the future needs for secure and fast internet infrastructure of such an important financial capital.”
The 3Tbps cable, landing in the heart of Istanbul has additional benefits for TIS, considering it adds capacity, security and redundancy to its existing terrestrial backbone that connects Istanbul to Vienna, via the Balkans region, increasing the region’s connectivity strength. TIS has confirmed plans to invest further in the region through data centres located at major landing points across the Mediterranean, and will make an enhanced Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution available at MedNautilus’ existing Istanbul data centre by Q4 2011.
